EL DORADO – An assistant basketball coach and special education teacher at El Dorado High School faces charges in a developing child sex case. Mike Melcher is charged with one count of aggravated indecent liberties with a child and one count of electronic solicitation of a child.
According to court records, Melcher is accused of fondling or touching a child under the age of 14, in an incident that happened last month. The same records also indicate he is accused of soliciting a child under the age of 14 for sex.
Melcher is employed as a special education teacher by the Butler County Special Education Interlocal #638. Assistant Director Bruce Givens tells ElDoradoLeader.Com that his future employment will be determined pending the outcome of the investigation.
USD 490 district officials released the following to media outlets earlier today:
“The El Dorado Police Department is conducting an investigation involving a Butler County Special Education Teacher and USD 490 Coach and information regarding this has now been released to the media.” the release stated. “Please be assured that safety of our students is our number one concern and the individual has not been on campus since the time of initial questioning by the police and will not return pending resolution. The matter was first brought to the attention of the district when the individual was first questioned and school officials are cooperating fully with the police.”
The District says they will keep what details they can give out coming.
“Should there be additional information that is appropriate and legal to release to parents, we will do so immediately”
Melcher was not available for comment at the time of this writing. His Twitter page was removed as of Friday afternoon.
Arraignment has been set for November 18th.
