Grizzlies roll in 97 point victory over Southwestern

EL DORADO – The Butler men posted the largest margin of victory in program history in a 137-40 victory over Southwestern JV on Monday evening.

The 97-point margin of victory eclipses the old record of 87 points, which came in a 138-51 win over Kansas State-Salina in 2014.

The Grizzlies just missed another record as they were one point away from the program record for most points scored, which also came in that game in 2014.

Butler had a chance to break the scoring record, but the Grizzlies missed a layup in the closing seconds.

Butler started the game by scoring 20 straight points as Southwestern went nearly six minutes before scoring its first points.

The Grizzlies, who went into halftime up by a 67-14 score, led by as many as 99 points after a Tevin Berry layup made the score 133-34 with 2:22 to play.

Equan Ards led Butler with 22 points, while Karlon McSpadden had 19 and Jared Armstrong scored 18. The Grizzlies spread the ball around offensively, as eight players finished in double figures. Butler shot 68 percent from the floor (54-of-79) and outrebounded Southwestern 39-14.

The Grizzlies are averaging 133.5 points per game after Butler won the season opener over Bethel JV by a 130-65 score on Friday.

Butler’s schedule will stiffen from here out. The Grizzlies face a 3-0 Hesston on Wednesday at home and then play their Jayhawk Conference opener at home on Saturday against Garden City.
