HULSE, MERCEDES M. (ERWIN), 96, went to Heaven on Friday, September 8, 2017 at Lakepoint Nursing Home of El Dorado.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, September 18, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church of El Dorado. Interment will be at the Leon, Kansas Cemetery at a later date.
Mercedes was born on July 9, 1921 in Leon, Kansas, the daughter of Ed and Faith (Kenoyer) Erwin.
She married Freeman Hulse on April 10, 1943 in Selma, Alabama where Freeman was stationed at the time. Freeman died in August 2004. Together they celebrated 61 years of marriage. Mercedes was a 1939 graduate of Leon High School.
Two dear friends were Dr. Harry and Dorothy Last. Dr. Last recognized her strong work ethic and sent Mercedes to nursing school at SBA Hospital. She graduated in 1942. She was in touch with the Lasts until their deaths. She said she was a nurse all because of their friendship and support. Mercedes’ first nursing job was working in the x-ray department at SBA.
The family lived in several locations, and returned to El Dorado in 1959 when he was transferred. They’d lived here ever since.
Mercedes was Director of Nursing at Knutson Manor Nursing Home. Later it became Lakepoint Nursing Home and she continued as their Director, retiring 30 years ago. She kept in touch with many former coworkers through the years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and D.A.R.
She is survived by: two sons, Dwight Hulse (Karen) of El Dorado, and David Hulse (Sharon) of Norman, Oklahoma; grandchildren, Eden Bloom, El Dorado; Heidi Hulse, Lawrence; Natalie Teague (Ryan), Webster Groves, MO; and Hannah Thompson (Michael), Wichita; great-grandchildren: Braden Bloom, of Colorado Springs, CO, Georgia and Lillian Teague, Webster Groves, MO.
She was preceded in death by her husband Freeman; her parents, brother Phillip Erwin; sisters Gretchen Weldon and Rojean Holem.
Memorial contributions in her name may be directed to the Mercedes Hulse Nursing Scholarship at Butler Community College, or to First United Methodist Church. They may be sent to Heritage Funeral Home.
